Gamers Raise $20K to Support Laid-Off Game Developers

When video game developers started losing their jobs by the thousands, their colleagues decided to fight back with what they do best: making games matter.

Necrosoft Games and the United Videogame Workers union just launched a game bundle on itch.io featuring over 100 indie titles. Every penny (minus small processing fees) goes straight to laid-off developers in the US and Canada through a hardship fund that helps people pay their bills while they search for new work.

The response has been immediate. Since launching on July 30, gamers have already raised over $20,000. The bundle costs just $10 minimum, but supporters can pay whatever they want for favorites like A Short Hike, SkateBIRD, and Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure.

The timing couldn't be more critical. According to the 2026 Game Developers Conference report, more than one quarter of all game developers have been laid off in the last two years. In the US alone, that number jumps to nearly one-third. These aren't just statistics. They're talented people who created successful, beloved games and still lost their livelihoods.

Anyone who worked in game development and lost their job after January 2024 can apply for help. You don't need to be a union member to receive funds. Developers, contractors, and freelancers all qualify.
