Gander's 9/11 Kindness Story Comes to Stratford Screens

When nearly 7,000 airline passengers suddenly needed a place to land on September 11, 2001, the small town of Gander, Newfoundland opened its heart without hesitation.

A new Canadian documentary capturing that remarkable act of community kindness is coming to Stratford Film Festival this September. YOU ARE HERE: A COME FROM AWAY STORY, directed by Moze Mossanen, tells the true story of what happened when U.S. airspace closed and dozens of international flights diverted to Gander's airport.

The town had only a handful of hotels. But that didn't stop residents from transforming their schools, churches, and community halls into temporary shelters for thousands of stranded travelers.

Gander locals provided meals, clothing, showers, transportation, and beds to complete strangers during one of the most frightening moments in modern history. The generosity lasted for days as passengers waited for permission to continue their journeys.

Festival director Megan Smith-Harris sees the documentary as a powerful reminder about human choice. "While Sept. 11 will always be a day of loss, the story of Gander reminds us that even in terrible circumstances, people have a choice about how they respond," she said.

Why This Inspires

This story became the basis for the hit Broadway musical "Come From Away," but the documentary brings viewers back to the real people and real moments of compassion. It shows how ordinary citizens created extraordinary comfort during a global crisis.

The residents of Gander didn't wait for permission or instructions. They simply saw people who needed help and acted.
