Gas Station Clerk Saves Teen From Kidnapper in Michigan
A 16-year-old girl silently mouthed "help" to a quick-thinking store clerk who placed himself between her and her armed kidnapper. Thanks to brave students, a vigilant employee, and swift police work, she's home safe.
When Abdulrahman Abohatem noticed something off about a customer asking a teenage girl to pay for his cigarettes, he stayed alert. Then the 16-year-old silently mouthed one word that changed everything: "help."
The girl had been kidnapped at gunpoint on her way to school in Hamtramck, Michigan on April 13th. A stranger she'd never met grabbed her while she waited for her school bus to Frontier International Academy that morning.
Her abductor eventually brought her to a Sunoco gas station in nearby Detroit where Abohatem was working. The clerk's instincts kicked in immediately when he saw the odd interaction at the counter.
Without hesitation, Abohatem stepped out from behind the protective glass. He positioned himself between the man and the girl, then ordered the stranger to leave his store.
Meanwhile, the victim's classmates had witnessed the kidnapping and tracked her cellphone location. They gave that information to police, who arrived at the gas station just as Abohatem was escorting the man out.

"That's the guy," Abohatem told arriving officers, pointing to the man he was kicking out. Police quickly arrested 48-year-old Donald Fields, a registered sex offender who now faces charges including kidnapping, criminal sexual conduct, and illegal gun possession.
A judge ordered Fields held without bond. The teenage girl was reunited with her family at home.
Sunny's Take
This rescue happened because courage showed up in multiple forms. The victim stayed calm enough to ask for help despite her terror. Her classmates acted fast instead of freezing. And Abohatem, who's preparing for his upcoming wedding, didn't think twice about stepping into danger.
"I believe this could have gone a lot worse than it did," Hamtramck Police Chief Hussein Farhat said at a news conference. Hamtramck Mayor Adam Alharbi called it "a testament to the vigilance of our community."
Abohatem's fellow Yemeni American community members rallied around him after the rescue. When asked how he felt, his answer was simple: "It feels good to save somebody. Sixteen years, she is a child."
One silent word, one observant clerk, and one community working together brought a child home safe.
