🦸 Hero Alert

Grand Canyon University sophomore Alexis Vakasiuola sank a 10-foot putt to win the Arizona Amateur Women's Championship, earning her spot at the prestigious U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. After finishing just one stroke short last year, the San Tan Valley native returned to claim victory and represent her home state on the national stage.

One year after coming up a single stroke short, Grand Canyon University golfer Alexis Vakasiuola returned to Arizona's biggest amateur tournament and made sure history wouldn't repeat itself.

The sophomore drained a clutch 10-foot putt on the final hole Saturday to capture the Arizona Amateur Women's Championship at Terravita Golf and Country Club in Scottsdale. Her victory came with the prized Kachina Trophy and something even more valuable: an automatic invitation to compete in the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship this August.

Vakasiuola took command early with a bogey-free opening round of 2-under par. She maintained that lead through 54 holes, finishing at 2-under to edge out TCU junior Gracie McGovern by one stroke in the 62-player field.

"Getting the exemption means so much to me," Vakasiuola told azgolf.org. "USGA events are just top tier, and the best players all over the world compete."

The San Tan Valley native will head to The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee, for the championship August 4-9. She won't be alone representing GCU, though.

Incoming freshman Gianna Singh from Elk Grove, California, already secured her spot at an earlier regional qualifier. Singh, who won this year's San Francisco City Championship, finished sixth in the Arizona Amateur tournament that Vakasiuola just conquered.

The Ripple Effect

GCU's women's golf program is building momentum that extends far beyond the regular season. Vakasiuola, already an NCAA regional qualifier as a freshman, watched her older sister Alyzzah (a former GCU golfer herself) finish 11th in the same tournament.

Meanwhile, teammate Rosie Maguire will represent Scotland next week at the European Ladies Team Championship in Ireland. Three Lopes competing on three different national and international stages shows a program on the rise.

For Vakasiuola, the victory feels both surreal and deeply personal. Representing Arizona and her roots at a USGA championship means everything to the young golfer who's already proven she belongs among the sport's elite competitors.
