Geauga County Volunteers Help 100+ Kids Start School Strong

The buzz of clippers, rustle of new backpacks, and laughter of excited children filled Morning Star Friends Church in Chardon on August 4 as volunteers rallied to help local kids start the school year right.

Help Me Learn Day 2026 brought together Geauga County Job and Family Services and Morning Star Friends Church to create something special. Families who pre-registered arrived to find everything their children needed for school, completely free.

Sara Shininger, community support and volunteer coordinator at JFS, partnered with Mariann Goodwin from Morning Star to turn the vision into reality. They coordinated donations and volunteers to offer clothing, school supplies, dental screenings, and fresh haircuts all under one roof.

Parents didn't have to choose between paying bills and buying notebooks. Their children got new clothes that fit, backpacks loaded with supplies, and haircuts that boosted their confidence. Dental screenings caught problems early, before they could interfere with learning.

The volunteers came from across Geauga County, giving their time to ensure no child started school feeling left behind. They helped families navigate the different stations, making sure every need was met with warmth and dignity.

This is community care at its finest. For many families, August brings anxiety as they calculate the cost of sending kids back to school properly equipped. A new backpack isn't just about holding books. Fresh clothes and a haircut aren't superficial. These things tell a child they matter, they belong, and they're ready to learn.
