Young moviegoers enjoying a film together in a dark cinema theater

Gen Z Sees 7 Movies a Year, Reviving Cinemas Worldwide

😊 Feel Good

Young people are ditching their phones and flocking to movie theaters, with 87% of Gen Z seeing at least one film last year. They're turning cinemas into their new favorite hangout spot.

Gen Z is saving the movies, and they're doing it by turning their phones off.

People born between 1997 and 2012 are now the most frequent moviegoers in America, defying predictions that digital natives would abandon theaters for streaming. According to a Fandango survey, 87% of Gen Z saw at least one film in cinemas last year, and they're averaging seven trips annually.

After growing up surrounded by unlimited streaming and social media, many young people are actively seeking escape from their screens. "As the internet becomes ever more pervasive, and in many ways ever more annoying, Gen Z are looking for experiences beyond the black mirror," say Benedict and Hannah Townsend, hosts of the podcast Talk of the Townsends.

Twenty-two-year-old film TikToker Florence Rose explains the appeal simply. "Going to the movies has become a way to connect with friends and share the moviegoing experience in person," she says. "Somewhere you can turn your phone off for a few hours and just disconnect from the world."

The economics make sense too. With 68% of young adults cutting back on nightlife due to costs, cinema offers affordable entertainment. Off-peak tickets for under-25s can cost as little as £7, compared to £15 club entry plus expensive drinks.

Monthly unlimited passes have surged in popularity, with options like Odeon Limitless offering access for £16.99. "Streaming has made watching a film feel less special," says 27-year-old member Robbie Nichols. "In a dark room with no distractions, you're forced to be present."

London's BFI Southbank has seen its under-25 ticket sales grow by 91% over four years. Those £4 tickets now account for more than 21% of total sales.

The Ripple Effect

The cinema revival is creating community in unexpected ways. Apps like Letterboxd, which lets viewers share quick movie reactions, have exploded from 1.7 million users in 2020 to 26 million in 2026.

"Gen Z are yearning for community," Rose explains. Social media buzz around new releases drives more young people to theaters so they can join the conversation happening online.

The impact extends beyond ticket sales. A recent British Council survey found that film and television are nearly twice as influential as digital creators in shaping UK culture for Gen Z.

With 2026 forecast to be the best year at the global box office since the pandemic began, the future of cinema looks brighter than it has in years.
