Cobb County School District in Georgia is showing the nation what happens when you invest in the people who shape young minds every single day.

The district just reported a four-year graduation rate of 90.9%, up from 89.2% last year. Students who stayed in Cobb schools all four years graduated at an eye-popping 99.2% rate.

But the real story is how they got there. Through a partnership with the University of West Georgia called Georgia's BEST, Cobb offers teachers advanced degrees at zero cost to them. Since launching in 2023, the program has enrolled 1,576 educators, with 824 already graduating.

The investment is working. An incredible 99% of participating teachers are staying in Cobb, and the district received over 55,000 applications to work there last school year. Every single classroom has a qualified teacher, a reality most districts can only dream about.

Meanwhile, Georgia has 5,000 open teaching positions statewide in the middle of the school year. Cobb found the solution for just $7,000 per educator, a cost that returns dividends in stable classrooms and student success.

Students are thriving across the board. Cobb kids scored an average 1,116 on the SAT, crushing both the state average of 1,031 and national average of 1,011. On the ACT, they averaged 23.7 compared to Georgia's 21.4 and the nation's 19.4.

The district also led metro Atlanta with 82.1% of students achieving Developing Learner level or above on Georgia Milestones assessments. Those numbers topped every neighboring district including Fulton, Gwinnett, and DeKalb.

The Ripple Effect

West Georgia College of Education Dean Mike Dishman told the school board they've built the solution to Georgia's teacher shortage crisis and proven it works. State lawmakers are now watching closely as the model gains attention for potential statewide expansion.

Chief Strategy Officer John Floresta pointed to the simple math. A relatively small investment provides returns in 1,500 steady paychecks and stable classrooms where students can actually learn.

The formula turns out to be beautifully simple: take care of teachers, and they'll take care of students.
