Georgia Mom Leads Choir Bringing Joy to Special Needs Community
Wanda Duval took over directing a special needs choir her daughter founded, creating a space where every voice matters. Her dedication just earned her a Community Hero Award from Piedmont Macon.
When Wanda Duval's daughter left for college, she inherited something precious: a choir that proves every voice deserves to be heard.
The Gifted Harmony Choir welcomes singers of all ability levels, creating a stage where people with special needs can shine. Founded in 2017 by Duval's teenage daughter Leah, the choir has become a Middle Georgia institution that brings joy and confidence to its members while breaking down social barriers.
When Leah moved away for college in 2019, Wanda stepped up to keep the music alive. She'd watched her daughter create something transformative, and she wasn't about to let it fade away.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the choir off stage for months, but their 2022 comeback at the historic Douglass Theatre brought the house down. The standing ovation marked more than just a return to performing—it showed how much the community had missed these special voices.
Sunny's Take

Assistant Director Tracie Campbell-Kendrick says Duval gives everything without expecting anything back. "She will give you the shirt off her back and go without," Campbell-Kendrick shared.
The choir has performed everywhere from Mercer University to the Tubman Museum, bringing their message of inclusion to retirement communities, clergy luncheons, and sporting events. Each performance challenges assumptions about what people with special needs can accomplish.
On March 31, Piedmont Macon Medical Center presented Duval with their Community Hero Award. CEO Stephen Daugherty said she embodies the hospital's values of compassion, dignity, and human connection.
"Through this choir, Wanda has directed more than just music," Daugherty explained. "She has built a community where every voice is valued and every individual is seen."
The award came with $500 for a charity of Duval's choice—money that will likely circle right back into supporting the choir and its members. It's the ninth time Piedmont Macon has honored someone making Middle Georgia better.
Meagon Davis, who nominated Duval, credits her with strengthening the choir's structure and expanding its reach. Under Wanda's leadership, Gifted Harmony has given members confidence, social skills, and friendships that extend beyond rehearsals.
In a world that often overlooks people with disabilities, Duval is making sure everyone gets their moment in the spotlight.
