
German Researchers Build Solar Panel That Cools Itself

The system uses something scientists call "passive daytime radiative cooling." Certain materials can emit heat through a specific wavelength range where Earth's atmosphere is basically invisible to thermal radiation. The tricky part was keeping the hot solar collector from warming up the cooling layer. Doctoral researcher Iván Alberto Cruz García solved this by placing a lens under the cooling layer that focuses sunlight onto a much smaller solar panel. When the team tested their prototype outdoors, it cooled surfaces down to 6.5 degrees Celsius below the surrounding air temperature. The system also generated 60.6 watts of electrical power per square meter and reached temperatures of nearly 111 degrees Celsius for heating water.

This innovation could transform how buildings interact with energy. Co-author Gan Huang envisions roofs and building facades becoming "active energy surfaces" that handle all three needs simultaneously.
The timing couldn't be better. Energy-hungry AI data centers desperately need both massive amounts of electricity and constant cooling. This system could provide both from the same square footage.
The research builds on the team's 2024 work developing transparent materials that cool buildings while letting in natural light. Now they're optimizing the design to make it even more efficient for real-world applications.
Other research teams worldwide are racing to perfect radiative cooling technology, with recent projects emerging from universities in China, the United States, Spain, Jordan, and Kuwait. The future of green building might just involve borrowing a little cold from the cosmos.
