German Scientists Crack Heat Pump Code for Apartments

Millions of apartment dwellers might soon kiss their gas bills goodbye, thanks to a breakthrough from Germany's top solar research institute.

Scientists at Fraunhofer ISE teamed up with 20 heating and housing companies to crack a stubborn problem. Replacing old gas and oil heating systems in multi-family buildings has been risky and expensive, especially when using propane heat pumps. Now they've developed safer, more efficient solutions that actually work in real apartments.

The team studied buildings of all sizes, from small walk-ups to large complexes with heating needs ranging from 23 kW to 93 kW. Some had individual apartment heaters, others used central systems. Each building presented unique challenges like tight spaces, noise concerns, and safety requirements.

Their big innovation? Slashing the amount of propane needed while boosting performance. For outdoor central systems, they cut propane use by 20% and increased efficiency by 15%. That means lower costs and less environmental impact.

The real game-changer came for individual apartments. The team built a compact 4.9 kW heat pump that runs on just 150 grams of propane. That tiny amount dramatically reduces fire risk, making it safe to install in kitchens and utility rooms where families actually live.

Project coordinator Björn Nienborg explained there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Each building needs a custom approach based on its size, available space, and hot water needs. That's why they created multiple solutions instead of just one.

The Ripple Effect: This breakthrough could accelerate Europe's shift away from fossil fuels in a sector that's been stubbornly difficult to clean up. Apartment buildings house millions of families but have lagged behind single-family homes in adopting heat pumps. These new designs remove major barriers that kept landlords and residents stuck with old technology.

The solutions are already moving beyond the lab. Researchers are building them into software that housing companies can use to design and choose the right heat pump system for any multi-family building.

Soon, apartment dwellers won't need to choose between affordability, safety, and sustainability when it comes to staying warm.
