German Woman Rescues 2,500+ Cows in India for 30 Years

When Friederike Irina Bruning found a dying calf by the roadside in Mathura, its leg broken and infested with maggots, she did what others wouldn't. She carried it home.

That single act of compassion in the 1990s transformed into a lifetime mission. The German woman, who first arrived in India at 20 searching for spiritual meaning, couldn't turn away the next injured cow people brought to her door, or the one after that.

In 1996, she founded Radha Surabhi Gaushala in Radha Kund. Today, the sanctuary cares for more than 2,500 cows that nobody else wanted: the sick, the blind, the disabled, and the elderly.

What makes this refuge different? It's not a dairy operation. Known now as Sudevi Dasi, Bruning actually buys milk from outside sources to feed orphaned calves.

She refuses to separate mothers from their babies. Every animal receives medical care, proper shelter, and something many never experienced before: love and dignity in their final years.

The numbers tell a powerful story. Over the past three years alone, 15,700 cows have received care through the trust's services.

In 2019, India honored Bruning with the Padma Shri, one of the country's highest civilian awards, for her work in social welfare and animal welfare. A woman who crossed continents found her calling protecting voiceless creatures that others had given up on.
