Germany Invests €10M in Clean Aviation by 2028

Germany just took a major step toward making air travel greener, and it could change how we fly in the coming decades.

Brandenburg and Saxony signed a landmark agreement with Clean Aviation at the Berlin Air Show, committing over €10 million by 2028 to develop low-emission aircraft technologies. The partnership targets regional and short-haul flights, where most Europeans travel.

This funding adds to hundreds of millions these regions have already invested since 2021 in next-generation aircraft research. They're focusing on hybrid-electric propulsion and other cutting-edge concepts that could dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of flying.

The agreement does more than fund research. It connects small manufacturers, research centers, and aerospace companies across Brandenburg and Saxony with a wider European innovation network spanning seven regions.

Both German states host concentrated clusters of aerospace expertise, making them ideal testing grounds for breakthrough technologies. Their industrial strength means innovations developed there can scale quickly across Europe's aviation sector.

The Ripple Effect

Clean Aviation aims to slash CO₂ emissions from short and medium-range flights by 30 percent through revolutionary technologies. That's significant when you consider these routes make up the majority of air traffic across Europe.

The partnership extends beyond Germany's borders, joining existing collaborations with regions in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Hamburg. Each partnership aligns local investment with Europe's broader goal of decarbonizing aviation.

For workers and communities, this means new opportunities in advanced manufacturing, lightweight materials, and aircraft design. The composites sector particularly stands to benefit, as lighter, stronger materials are essential for fuel-efficient planes.

The timing matters. Aviation accounts for about 2-3 percent of global CO₂ emissions, but that number is rising as more people fly. Solutions developed through this partnership could help the industry grow sustainably instead of choosing between connectivity and climate responsibility.
