Germany Lands Europe's Second Offshore Hydrogen Project

Germany just won a major clean energy project that could help power ships and coastal cities without fossil fuels.

French renewable energy company Lhyfe announced it's relocating its second offshore hydrogen production facility to a German port instead of Belgium. The 10-megawatt floating plant will produce clean hydrogen using ocean wind power, building on their groundbreaking 2023 pilot project.

The move highlights Germany's aggressive push into hydrogen technology as Europe races to meet climate goals. While the new timeline means delays from the original plan, the project represents a critical step in making ocean-based renewable energy practical for everyday use.

Offshore hydrogen production solves a stubborn problem: how to capture abundant wind energy at sea and transport it efficiently to shore. Traditional undersea cables lose energy over distance, but hydrogen can be piped or shipped like natural gas.

Lhyfe's first pilot, called Sealhyfe, proved the concept works in real ocean conditions. That 1-megawatt floating platform produced Europe's first offshore hydrogen in 2023, weathering storms and waves while generating clean fuel.

The Ripple Effect

Germany's success in attracting this project reflects broader momentum in clean hydrogen. The country recently passed legislation requiring 10% renewable hydrogen-based fuels in land transport, creating guaranteed demand that makes projects like this economically viable.

Other nations are watching closely. Poland, Jordan, China, and Brazil have all announced major green hydrogen projects in recent months, while California is deploying hydrogen-powered trucks and the EU has opened €20 billion in public-private partnership funding.

The technology could transform shipping, one of the hardest industries to decarbonize. Container ships and ferries near German ports could eventually refuel with hydrogen produced just offshore, eliminating massive carbon emissions without requiring complete fleet replacement.

Lhyfe CEO Matthieu Guesné acknowledged the location change will delay construction but emphasized the company's commitment to proving offshore hydrogen can scale beyond pilot projects.

When completed, the facility will produce enough hydrogen to power hundreds of vehicles daily or supply industrial users along Germany's coast. More importantly, it will provide the engineering data needed to build even larger installations across Europe's windy northern seas.
