Germany Opens Bidding for 2.5 GW Wind Power Projects

Germany is opening its doors to clean energy developers in a big way, announcing bids for enough wind power to supply millions of homes.

The country's Federal Network Agency invited companies to compete for 2.5 gigawatts of onshore wind projects and an additional 475 megawatts of innovative renewable energy developments. Together, these projects could power the equivalent of several million households while slashing carbon emissions.

The deadline for submissions is May 4, 2026, giving developers just over a year to prepare their proposals. Companies can bid at rates up to 7.25 euro cents per kilowatt hour for wind projects and 7.13 cents for the innovation tender.

The 2.5 gigawatt wind tender represents just one quarter of Germany's ambitious plans. The country intends to award a whopping 10 gigawatts of onshore wind capacity throughout 2026 across four separate bidding rounds.

What makes this particularly exciting is the flexibility built into the program. Projects that already won capacity allocations can participate again and even expand their awarded capacity by up to 15 percent, allowing successful developers to scale up their impact.

The innovation tender casts an even wider net, welcoming projects using solar, wind, biomass, storage, geothermal, and hydropower technologies. This mix-and-match approach encourages creative solutions and helps different clean energy sources work together more effectively.

Solar developers get special attention too. Projects can include solar installations on agricultural land, as long as developers haven't already built more than 80 gigawatts of ground-mounted solar since January 2023. The rules also accommodate solar projects on grassland and arable land in economically disadvantaged areas, spreading clean energy benefits to communities that need them most.
