Germany's Solar Power Hits Record 31% of Electricity

Germany's solar panels just powered through a historic summer, generating more than 30% of the country's electricity for three months straight.

For the first time ever, solar systems fed over 12 terawatt hours of clean electricity into Germany's public grid in a single month this July. That's enough power to run millions of homes without burning a single ounce of coal or gas.

The numbers tell an inspiring story of progress. Solar panels covered 31.6% of Germany's electricity demand in July, 30.4% in June, and 30.3% in May. Just one year ago, the country had never crossed the 30% threshold even once.

Mother Nature gave solar panels some extra help this summer. Germany enjoyed 272 hours of sunshine in July, about 30% more than the typical summer month. Some southwestern regions basked in up to 12 hours of daily sunshine, approaching all-time records.

But sunshine alone doesn't explain the leap forward. Germany has been steadily expanding its solar capacity, growing from 107 gigawatts last year to 125 gigawatts today. That's like adding thousands of football fields worth of solar panels in just 12 months.

The milestone isn't just a German success story. Across the entire European Union, solar power supplied more than 20% of electricity demand throughout May, June, and July for the first time in history.
