Germany's Wind and Solar Now Beat Fossil Fuels

Germany just crossed a threshold that seemed impossible two decades ago: clean wind and solar power now generate more electricity than all fossil fuels combined.

New data from the Energy Institute shows that wind and solar produced 44% of Germany's electricity in 2025, edging out fossil fuels by a single percentage point. It's a slim margin, but it represents a seismic shift in how Europe's largest economy powers itself.

The transformation has been swift and dramatic. Since Germany passed its landmark renewable energy law in 2000, wind and solar generation has surged by 42 percentage points. Meanwhile, coal, once the backbone of German industry, has shrunk from supplying more than half the country's electricity to just 21%.

The speed of this transition has caught even experts by surprise. Many now believe Germany will phase out coal completely before 2038, years ahead of the original target.

This shift happened despite Germany shutting down its nuclear plants, which still provided nearly 7% of the country's power in 2022. The country chose to bet entirely on renewables rather than maintain nuclear facilities, making the achievement even more remarkable.

Germany's milestone mirrors a broader European trend. Across the entire EU, wind and solar generated 30% of electricity in 2025, surpassing the 29% from fossil fuels for the first time.

The Ripple Effect

Germany's success is already reshaping European energy markets and proving that major industrial economies can thrive without fossil fuels. Other countries are watching closely and accelerating their own renewable transitions.

The clean energy boom is creating unexpected challenges too. Germany has seen a 20% increase in times when operators have to temporarily shut down wind and solar farms because they're generating more power than the grid can handle. It's the kind of problem energy planners dreamed of having a decade ago.

Citizens are responding with their wallets. Heat pumps, which run on electricity rather than gas, outsold traditional gas boilers for the first time in 2025, capturing 48% of new heating system sales. Sales jumped another 34% in early 2026 as families rushed to lock in lower energy costs.

The message is clear: when governments create the right policies and citizens embrace change, even the most fossil fuel dependent economies can transform in less than a generation.
