Ghana Funds $100M Women's Development Bank to Launch Soon

Rural women entrepreneurs across Ghana are one step closer to securing funding for their businesses without the roadblocks that have held them back for years.

The Ghanaian government has committed 452.3 million cedis (about $100 million) over two years to establish a Women's Development Bank. The institution is specifically designed to serve women-owned businesses, young entrepreneurs, and members of marginalized communities who struggle to get loans from traditional banks.

The funding is real and waiting. Ghana allocated 51.3 million cedis in startup capital in 2025, with another 401 million cedis approved in the 2026 budget specifically for women-owned micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.

Now women's rights network NETRIGHT is urging the government to move faster. At a recent forum on inclusive budgeting, NETRIGHT leader Patricia Blankson Akakpo emphasized that rural women and entrepreneurs have been waiting long enough for access to these services.

The bank aims to solve problems that have plagued women business owners for generations. High interest rates, strict collateral requirements, and complicated documentation have traditionally locked rural women out of financial services. This new institution is designed to remove those exact barriers.

NETRIGHT has already submitted detailed recommendations to the Ministry of Finance for 2027. Their proposals include using women-friendly lending models like rural savings and loan associations, and requiring transparent reporting with data broken down by gender and community.

The organization is also pushing for agricultural programs to dedicate 40 to 50 percent of funding to women farmers, in line with Ghana's Affirmative Action Act. They recommend connecting women's farming cooperatives directly to state school feeding programs and the National Food Buffer Company, creating guaranteed markets for their products.

The Ripple Effect

When women entrepreneurs succeed, entire communities benefit. Studies consistently show that women invest earnings back into their families and local economies at higher rates than men. By removing financial barriers for thousands of rural businesswomen, this bank could lift entire villages out of poverty and create opportunities for the next generation.

The infrastructure and funding are in place for Ghana to become a model for women's financial inclusion across Africa.
