Ghana Gives 2M Girls Free Period Products for School

✨ Faith Restored

Ghana is fighting period poverty by distributing free sanitary pads to two million schoolgirls, from fifth grade through high school. The program aims to keep girls in class, boost their confidence, and lift financial pressure from families.

Millions of girls in Ghana will no longer have to choose between attending school and managing their periods with dignity.

Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is leading a nationwide effort to provide free sanitary pads to about two million girls across the country. The program reaches students from Primary Five through senior high school, with special attention to vulnerable groups including special needs schools, Islamic schools, and correctional facilities.

The government distributed over six million sanitary pads in 2025 alone. Officials have allocated $292.4 million in the 2026 budget to keep the program running nationwide.

In Accra, Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Ocloo personally delivered supplies to students at four institutions this week. Schools like Tetteh Ocloo School for the Deaf, Dzorwulu Special School, and Castle Road Special School received thousands of pads for their students.

The Greater Accra Region alone will reach over 1,000 girls across 17 schools and institutions. About 30,000 sanitary pads are going to vulnerable groups, including psychiatric hospitals and female correctional facilities.

Member of Parliament James Enu pointed out that many girls struggle to focus in class during their periods. Without proper supplies, students miss school days and fall behind in their studies.

The Ripple Effect

This program does more than provide hygiene products. It tackles the stigma around menstruation through public education campaigns while keeping girls in classrooms where they belong.

The initiative removes a major barrier to education for disadvantaged students. Girls with special needs, who face additional challenges communicating their needs, will receive ongoing guidance on proper usage.

Families no longer have to stretch tight budgets to buy expensive sanitary products each month. Teachers report that students arrive more confident and ready to learn when they know their basic needs are covered.

Ghana's investment in girls' health and education sends a powerful message: no girl should miss out on learning because of something as natural as menstruation.
