Electrical transformer installation serving residential community in Accra, Ghana with power lines visible

Ghana Power Company Invests $3M in 40 Communities

😊 Feel Good

Forty communities across Ghana's capital region just got a major power reliability upgrade. The Electricity Company of Ghana invested over $3 million in the first quarter of 2026 to replace overloaded transformers and reduce outages.

Residents in 40 communities across Accra are celebrating more reliable electricity after a major infrastructure upgrade. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) invested more than $3 million in early 2026 to replace faulty transformers, reduce power outages, and improve service across six districts in the Accra West Region.

The investment targets a problem that has frustrated households and businesses for years: overloaded transformers that burn out during peak hours, leaving entire neighborhoods in the dark. Communities from Dunyo Township to Gbawe Market and Amasaman China Mall received new or upgraded transformers designed to handle growing power demands.

Sariel Etwire, General Manager for Accra West ECG, said the company remains committed to delivering quality, reliable, and safe electricity services to support economic growth. She explained that illegal connections, uncleared vegetation, and vandalism have been major causes of transformer failures.

When transformers become overloaded, the company loses equipment to burnouts while customers suffer from persistent low voltage and blackouts, especially during evening hours when families need power most. Etwire appealed to community leaders and residents to protect the new infrastructure by reporting unauthorized tampering and keeping trees trimmed away from power lines.

The Ripple Effect

This investment goes beyond keeping the lights on. Reliable electricity means small businesses can operate predictably, students can study after dark, and hospitals can serve patients without interruption.

Community representatives from the beneficiary areas expressed gratitude for the upgrades and pledged to protect the installations against vandalism. The commitment signals a growing partnership between the utility company and the communities it serves.

ECG is currently undertaking a large-scale transformer installation and upgrade program across all its operational areas to tackle overloading challenges region-wide. The Accra West Region alone oversees eight operational districts serving hundreds of thousands of residents.

The company also urged residents to immediately report fallen power lines, especially during and after rainfall, to prevent accidents and ensure quick repairs. This collaborative approach between ECG and communities could become a model for infrastructure protection across Ghana.

Forty communities now have the reliable power they need to grow and thrive.
