Ghana Seeks €1M Spanish Grant to Expand Ayalolo Buses

Commuters across Ghana's major cities could soon see more reliable public transport options as the government moves to secure a €1 million grant from Spain to expand the Ayalolo bus fleet.

Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim announced the funding opportunity at a stakeholder meeting on Friday. He explained that the initiative came after new leadership at Ayalolo recognized the urgent need to replace buses that have been deteriorating since 2014.

The new Managing Director reached out directly to the Spanish Embassy after assessing the situation. Spanish authorities responded positively and expressed readiness to provide the funds through a grant facility.

The only remaining hurdle is a formal letter of approval from Ghana's Ministry of Finance. "All that they needed was for the Minister for Finance to give a letter of no objection," Ibrahim stated.

Once approved, the €1 million grant will go directly toward purchasing new buses to strengthen the Bus Rapid Transit system. The expansion aims to ease the daily pressure on commuters who rely on public transport to reach work, school, and essential services.
