Lagos Oba: Nigeria Will Emerge Stronger From Challenges

The Oba of Lagos delivered a powerful message of unity and hope this week, urging Nigerians to look beyond their differences and work together for a stronger nation.

His Royal Majesty, Oba Riliwanu Babatunde Akiolu, spoke Friday during a special ceremony at his palace on Lagos Island. He installed six new White Cap Chiefs, traditional leaders who serve important cultural roles in Nigeria's largest city.

The Oba told the gathered crowd that Nigeria can overcome its current struggles if citizens put their country first. He emphasized that progress requires contributions from everyone, regardless of tribe or social status.

"Nigeria will emerge stronger and better under the current administration," he said, calling on the newly installed chiefs to champion Lagos and Nigeria's progress. The ceremony celebrated both cultural heritage and forward-looking leadership.

The six new chiefs include Architect Gbolahan Oki, Chief Ajibade Nosiru-Ayeni, Chief Adebola Olalekan Dosunmu, Chief Yusuf Jinadu Bajulu, Chief Razak Onimole, and Chief Lookman Oluwa. Each received traditional titles carrying centuries of history.

Friends, family members, and residents packed the palace grounds for the installation. Outside, the celebration took on a carnival atmosphere as the community came together.

The Ripple Effect

The Oba's message of unity comes as Lagos delivers practical solutions to everyday challenges. Just days after his speech, the Lagos State Waterways Authority announced the reopening of Ikorodu Ferry Terminal on January 19.

The terminal had been closed since October due to water hyacinth plants blocking safe navigation. Thousands of commuters were diverted to other terminals during the three-month closure.

Workers cleared the waterways and completed full safety assessments with help from the National Inland Waterways Authority. Ferry operators can now resume their regular schedules, reconnecting communities across Lagos's extensive water routes.

The reopening means shorter commutes and easier access for residents who depend on water transport in this coastal megacity. It's a tangible example of government responsiveness to community needs.
