British company Anemoi is bringing spinning wind sails to cargo ships, cutting fuel use by up to 21% while working with any fuel type. South Korean shipbuilders are now showing interest in the technology that helps ships harness wind power.

Cargo ships are getting a boost from an old idea made new: massive spinning cylinders that capture wind and slash fuel costs by double digits.

British company Anemoi Marine Technologies installs Rotor Sails on vessels, tall spinning towers that generate forward thrust using wind. The automated system works alongside a ship's main engine, reducing how much fuel the vessel burns.

The results speak for themselves. A bulk carrier with three Rotor Sails cut fuel use by an average of 9.1% over a full year, with some trips hitting 21% savings.

Now the company is courting South Korean shipbuilders, and the timing might finally be right. "South Korea combines world-class shipbuilding, sophisticated shipowners and strong marine engineering capabilities," Anemoi Chief Commercial Officer Nick Contopoulos told The Korea Herald last week in Seoul.

Several major Korean shipyards have approached Anemoi about working together. Korean banks are also backing more fuel-efficient vessels, signaling the market may be warming to wind propulsion technology.

The company just announced a milestone with shipping giant Maersk. They'll install Rotor Sails on a large container ship, the first planned installation on this type of vessel.

Container ships pose a unique challenge because their decks are packed with cargo. Anemoi designed the configuration to work around container handling, proving the technology can adapt to different vessel types.

The Ripple Effect

Wind propulsion offers shipping companies a rare advantage: it works with any fuel type. As the industry explores cleaner options like methanol and ammonia, Rotor Sails can complement whatever fuel a ship uses.

"I see wind as a complementary efficiency technology supporting the energy transition rather than competing with any of the fuel options in the market," Contopoulos said. The technology doesn't force companies to choose between solutions.

Anemoi now has 29 Rotor Sails operating on vessels worldwide, with more than 16 additional units on order. Each installation proves that old-fashioned wind power still has a role in modern shipping.

The technology addresses mounting pressure on shipping companies to cut emissions without requiring a complete overhaul of existing vessels. Ships can keep their current engines while still reducing their environmental footprint and fuel costs.

For an industry responsible for moving 90% of the world's goods, even modest fuel savings add up to major environmental wins.
