Gift Wrappers Raise $27K for South African Wildlife Rescue

Shoppers at Ballito Junction mall got their Christmas presents wrapped beautifully while supporting a cause that saves lives—just not human ones.

The South African shopping center's annual gift wrapping fundraiser brought in R108,000 (about $27,000 USD) in December 2025 for Wildlife Rescue, a volunteer organization that responds to injured, orphaned, and distressed animals across KwaZulu-Natal's Dolphin Coast. More than 50 volunteers donated their time to wrap gifts for hundreds of customers who were happy to skip the gift wrap stress.

Wildlife Rescue founder Lindy Elms leads a team of dedicated first responders who work without charging for their services. The nonprofit relies entirely on donations and fundraising events to keep operating.

When an animal is hurt or in danger, Wildlife Rescue volunteers assess the situation, stabilize the creature, and transport it to veterinarians or rehabilitation centers. They partner closely with other wildlife organizations to ensure each animal gets the medical care it needs to recover and return to the wild.

The Ripple Effect

The funds from this single December initiative will fuel Wildlife Rescue's work for months to come. But the organization does more than emergency response—they're actively protecting the region's biodiversity through education programs that teach locals how to coexist with wildlife.

Their outreach includes promoting indigenous plant gardens that provide natural habitats, advocating for wildlife-friendly trash bins that keep animals safe, and pushing for protected crossings that reduce road fatalities. Every rescued animal becomes an opportunity to educate the community about conservation.

Ballito Junction has run this holiday fundraiser for years, rotating which local nonprofit benefits each season. The mall recognizes that the success belongs to the community itself—the volunteers who showed up to fold paper and tie ribbons, and the shoppers who chose to support local wildlife instead of wrapping gifts at home.

Wildlife Rescue shared their gratitude on social media: "We are so grateful to Ballito Junction and our wonderful community for spreading a little Christmas cheer in aid of Wildlife."

Twenty-seven thousand dollars will answer a lot of emergency calls and give countless animals a second chance at life in the wild.
