Girl, 7, Cares for Sick Father, Sparks Donations

When San Mengru's father was hospitalized with heart disease, the seven-year-old didn't wait for help. She became his full-time caregiver.

While other kids her age were on winter break playing with friends, San was making medical appointments, tracking down nurses, picking up test results, and buying meals at Qiqihaer No 1 People's Hospital in northeastern China's Heilongjiang province. Her parents are divorced, her grandmother is over 70 and can't visit daily, and her other relatives work in distant cities.

A fellow patient named Pei noticed the small girl managing everything alone. His father was in the bed next to San's dad, and he watched her navigate the hospital with quiet determination.

"I have witnessed her do all this. I feel sad for her," Pei said before his own father transferred to another hospital. Before leaving, he gave San money, fruit, and milk, then posted a video hoping others would help.
