Glasgow Charity Raises £1.2M for 12 UK Health Organizations

A Scottish charity founded in memory of a young cancer patient has donated £1.2 million to organizations helping sick children and families across the UK.

The Emmie Smillie Charity Foundation split the enormous sum among 12 charities this September, supporting everything from cancer treatment centers to children's hospitals and hospices. The money came from events held over the past year, including a star-studded golf tournament that drew football icons like Sir Alex Ferguson, Alan Shearer, and Ally McCoist.

Among the recipients were The Beatson cancer center, Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity, and several hospices across Scotland. Each organization received substantial funding to continue their work supporting patients and families during some of their hardest moments.

The Glasgow-based charity was founded in 2017 by the family of Emmie Smillie after she lost her battle with cancer. In just nine years, the foundation has now donated more than £5 million total to healthcare organizations across the country.

The Ripple Effect

Every pound raised by the foundation multiplies into real help for families facing medical crises. The Beatson cancer center uses donations to fund research and patient support services. Children's hospital charities provide toys, entertainment, and comfort items that make long hospital stays more bearable for young patients. Hospices rely on community funding to offer compassionate end-of-life care at no cost to families.

The charity's success depends on people giving both money and time throughout the year. Volunteers organize events, participate in fundraisers, and spread the word about the foundation's mission.

Andy Smillie, Emmie's father, said the generosity has been overwhelming year after year. "Whether people are raising money or giving up their time, our family really appreciates it," he explained. The foundation assists organizations that help others in different ways every single day of the year.

The family plans to continue fundraising in Emmie's memory throughout 2027 and beyond, turning their personal loss into lasting support for thousands of patients and families who need it most.
