Global Solar Power Hits Record High, Surges 30% in 2025

The world just hit a massive clean energy milestone that proves the renewable revolution is happening faster than anyone predicted.

Global solar power generation reached 2,778 terawatt-hours in 2025, a stunning 30% jump from the previous year. That's the fastest growth rate in eight years and enough electricity to meet every single power need across all 27 European Union countries.

China led the charge, producing 1,175 TWh of solar energy and adding 336 TWh of new capacity in just one year. That's nearly half of all new solar generation added worldwide. The United States, India, Japan, and Germany rounded out the top five producers, together accounting for 70% of global solar output.

The surge isn't happening by accident. Solar panel prices have crashed by 90% between 2015 and 2024, making clean energy more affordable than ever. That dramatic cost drop explains why solar represented 68% of all new renewable energy capacity added from 2019 to 2024.

Developing nations are seizing the opportunity too. Brazil added 17.3 TWh of new solar generation in 2025, while Pakistan brought 16.8 TWh online. These countries are leapfrogging straight to clean energy instead of building fossil fuel infrastructure.

The Ripple Effect

This solar boom means cleaner air for millions of people living near coal plants. It means stable electricity prices less vulnerable to fuel price shocks. And it means every country, regardless of oil reserves, can generate its own clean, affordable power from sunshine.

Energy think tank Ember, which compiled the data, notes that this rapid growth puts the world on track to meet critical climate goals while improving energy access. The technology works, it's getting cheaper every year, and countries everywhere are racing to install it.
