Golfer Michael Kim Drains Final Putt for Historic 59

Michael Kim stood over a 24-foot putt on the 18th hole, knowing he was one stroke away from golf history. When the ball rolled in, the 33-year-old threw both arms skyward before unleashing a massive fist pump.

Kim had just carded a 59 at the 3M Open in Minnesota, becoming only the 15th player to break 60 on the PGA Tour. His flawless second round featured 12 birdies without a single bogey, putting him three shots ahead heading into the weekend.

The Seoul-born American caught fire early, draining five straight birdies from holes three through seven. He worked his putter magic with an 11-footer at the third, a 12-footer at the fourth, and putts ranging from two to 10 feet on the next three holes.

After adding three more birdies on the front nine and early back nine, Kim faced a choice on the final stretch. He could play it safe and settle for a 60 or 61, or he could go for golf immortality.

"I just kind of told myself, 'this is the moment to get into the history books,'" Kim said. "'Let's not try to luck our way into it, let's step up and hit some really good shots.'"

With water lurking on the final two holes, Kim didn't back down. He buried a 13-foot birdie at 16, followed by a 17-footer at the par-three 17th, then capped his magical day with that 24-footer on 18.

Kim's round reminds us that the biggest moments often come down to a simple choice: play it safe or go for greatness. His previous best round was a 62, meaning he shattered his personal record by three strokes when it mattered most.

The performance puts Kim in elite company, joining a list that includes only 14 other players in PGA Tour history. Only Jim Furyk has ever gone lower, with a tour-record 58 in 2016.
