A soccer team from a city under rebel occupation just won their country's national cup, sending a powerful message about resilience and unity.

Daring Club Virunga from Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, claimed victory in the 60th Coupe du Congo after defeating AS Butras 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw. The win secures their first-ever spot in the CAF Confederation Cup, Africa's second-tier continental tournament, starting this September.

The timing makes this triumph extraordinary. Goma, the team's home city in eastern DRC, currently sits under occupation by AFC-M23 rebel forces. Despite the conflict disrupting daily life, the team traveled across the country and battled through each round with remarkable determination.

"We approached each match with the desire to go all the way," said coach Tifo Miezi after the final whistle. "We are very happy."
