Gonzaga Wins Final WCC Title on Defense and Grit

When Gonzaga lost its tallest starter to injury 15 games ago, the team could have crumbled. Instead, they built something better.

The Bulldogs captured their final West Coast Conference tournament championship Tuesday in Las Vegas, defeating Santa Clara 79-68 behind suffocating defense and a powerful halftime adjustment. Coach Mark Few's message to his team was simple: "No rebounds, no rings."

Santa Clara dominated the boards in the first half, grabbing 11 offensive rebounds and scoring 14 second-chance points. But Gonzaga emerged from the locker room transformed, locking down the league's highest-scoring offense and holding them to just 38% shooting.

"It's five against the ball, not just worried about our man scoring," said senior guard Jalen Warley, who played through a thigh injury at about 75% health. "When it works, it's really special."

The victory marked Gonzaga's 14th championship in the 18 tournaments held at Orleans Arena. More impressively, they achieved it without their 6-foot-10 starter Braden Huff, who suffered a knee injury earlier in the season.

What the Bulldogs lacked in height, they made up for in versatility. Their lineup of rangy guards and forwards could defend multiple positions, switching seamlessly to shut down Santa Clara's talented scorers.

Warley himself embodies this resilience. After missing the final two regular-season games with his injury, he underwent a procedure to drain fluid and blood from his thigh, regaining enough mobility to contribute when his team needed him most.

The Bright Side

This Gonzaga team is writing itself into the program's defensive history alongside legendary units from 2017 and 2019. Assistant coach Brian Michaelson praised their versatility, noting they can deploy multiple defensive coverages that bigger teams cannot.

The championship also marks the end of an era, as Gonzaga joins the Pac-12 Conference next season. They're leaving the WCC on top, proving that adaptation beats adversity every time.

Their performance shows what's possible when a team commits to a shared identity. Defense became their calling card, and every player bought in completely.

With the NCAA Tournament ahead, Gonzaga has momentum and a blueprint for success built on grit, versatility, and five players moving as one.
