Google Building World's First AI Campus in Seoul

South Korea just landed a major win in the global race for artificial intelligence leadership.

Google and the South Korean government signed an agreement Monday to build the world's first AI campus in Seoul. The partnership brings together one of tech's biggest players with a nation determined to become an AI powerhouse alongside the US and China.

The campus will give local startups and researchers direct access to Google's AI expertise. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung formalized the partnership through a memorandum of understanding, marking a new chapter in global tech cooperation.

Under the deal, Google will send at least 10 engineers from its US headquarters to work at the Seoul campus. "Hassabis agreed to actively consider dispatching Google researchers to Korea. The CEO instantly accepted our request to send at least 10," said Kim Yong-beom, a presidential policy adviser.

The collaboration supports South Korea's ambitious K-Moonshot project, which integrates AI with science to tackle major national challenges. The Seoul government wants to boost its research productivity to the world's fifth-highest level by 2030 and use AI to address 12 national missions by 2035 in areas like biotechnology, energy, space, and semiconductors.

"This will serve as a key opportunity for the two organizations to cooperate in accelerating AI-driven innovation in science and technology centered on Korea's K-Moonshot," said Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon.

The Ripple Effect goes beyond just one campus. Hassabis expressed interest in expanding partnerships with major Korean companies including Samsung, SK Hynix, Hyundai's Boston Dynamics, and LG for new joint projects. These collaborations could spark innovations that ripple across multiple industries, from smartphones to robotics to clean energy.

The AI campus will also focus on training tomorrow's tech leaders. Hassabis said the partnership "will help train the next generation in these amazing technologies through internships at our AI hub and other training programmes."

During their meeting, Hassabis and President Lee discussed building a responsible AI ecosystem and addressing growing cyber security threats. The conversations reflect a mature approach to AI development that prioritizes both innovation and safety.
