Google found a way to fuel its growing AI needs without abandoning its climate goals, signing a massive deal for underground heat that never runs out.
The tech giant agreed Tuesday to buy 396 megawatts of geothermal electricity from energy startup Fervo to power a planned data center in Utah. That's enough clean energy to power roughly 300,000 homes when the Cape Station plant comes online in 2028.
The deal gets even bigger from there. Google has the option to purchase an additional 600 megawatts through June 2030, bringing the total potential agreement to nearly one gigawatt of carbon-free power.
This partnership matters because Google faced a climate crossroads earlier this year. The company promised to reach net-zero emissions by 2030, but in April signed a deal for 933 megawatts of natural gas power in Texas to meet surging AI demands. Clean energy advocates worried Google might sacrifice its environmental commitments for computing power.
The Fervo agreement offers a different path forward. Fervo uses enhanced geothermal technology to tap heat from deeper underground than traditional geothermal plants can reach. The company holds permits to develop up to 2 gigawatts at Cape Station, but engineers believe the site could actually generate 4 gigawatts once fully developed.

That upper estimate would double the entire geothermal generating capacity currently operating across the United States, according to a recent Department of Energy report. Unlike solar panels that need sunshine or wind turbines that need breeze, geothermal plants generate steady electricity 24 hours a day from the Earth's constant underground heat.
The Ripple Effect
This deal validates more than just one company's technology. It demonstrates that major corporations can meet explosive energy demands without defaulting to fossil fuels.
Google and Fervo have worked together for over five years, with Google buying some of Fervo's very first electrons and recently investing before the startup went public. That patient partnership helped prove enhanced geothermal technology works at commercial scale.
The broader potential excites energy experts most. According to the Department of Energy, enhanced geothermal technologies could eventually generate up to 57 terawatts of electricity across the United States. That's more than enough to power the entire country many times over using heat that's literally beneath our feet.
Wall Street noticed the achievement too. Fervo's stock jumped 30% on news of the Google deal, rewarding investors who believed underground heat could compete with solar and wind for clean energy contracts.
America's data centers won't stop growing, but this deal proves they can grow green.
