Google Creates 150+ AI Jobs in Singapore

Google just announced plans to create over 150 new jobs in Singapore, signaling major confidence in the city-state's role as an AI innovation hub. The tech giant unveiled the hiring push at its Google for Singapore 2026 event, focusing primarily on technology and engineering positions.

The new roles span customer solutions engineers, data center technicians, product managers, and other technical positions. Many will support Google's brand-new Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence for security, which will tackle emerging risks in AI systems.

The security center addresses a pressing concern: as AI agents become more capable of performing tasks independently, they need robust safeguards. Google's team will ensure that AI assistants don't overstep their boundaries, like accessing payment information when they're only meant to book health appointments.

"As AI advances, we need to continue to do even more to get ahead of bad actors and empower our users," said Laurie Richardson, Google's vice president of trust and safety. Research scientists, data scientists, and security engineers will lead this crucial work.

Google has invested roughly $5 billion in Singapore's tech infrastructure since establishing its Asia-Pacific headquarters there in 2007. The company now employs almost 3,000 people locally and operates four data centers in the region.

The announcement included other AI-powered initiatives beyond hiring. Google partnered with local startup Amili to develop a personalized nutrition app combining Gemini AI with gut microbiome data, set to launch in beta by May 2026.

The company is also teaming up with Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority to launch a three-month accelerator program. This initiative will teach 500 fresh graduates and mid-career professionals how to apply AI in non-technical roles like HR, legal, and accounting.

The Ripple Effect

This expansion represents more than just job creation for one company. Singapore's Minister for Digital Development Josephine Teo attended the event and hinted at "significant announcements" about national AI adoption plans in the upcoming Budget statement.

While AI has displaced some workers through automation, it's simultaneously creating specialized roles that didn't exist before. The shift isn't about fewer jobs overall, but different jobs requiring new skills.

Other tech giants like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft are making similar long-term commitments to the region with cloud infrastructure and AI research. The pattern suggests Singapore is positioning itself as Southeast Asia's AI nerve center.
