
Google Gives 21 African Languages to Local Researchers
Google just handed ownership of a massive African language dataset to African universities and researchers, not keeping it for itself. The move could help millions finally speak to AI in their own languages.
If you've ever tried talking to Siri or Alexa in Yoruba, Hausa, or Luganda, you know the frustrating silence that follows. AI doesn't speak most African languages, leaving hundreds of millions of people locked out of the technology revolution.
Google just took a major step to fix that. In early February, the tech giant launched WAXAL, a dataset covering 21 African languages with over 11,000 hours of recorded speech from nearly 2 million recordings.
The real breakthrough? Google doesn't own it.
Instead, African universities and organizations who helped create WAXAL retain full ownership of the data they collected. Partners include Makerere University in Uganda, the University of Ghana, Rwanda's Digital Umuganda, and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences.
"Success lies in the local ownership of this innovation cycle," Abdoulaye Diack, research project manager at Google AI, told Rest of World. The dataset is open-source, meaning African entrepreneurs can build AI products without going through Silicon Valley middlemen.
This matters because data ownership has become one of the biggest fights in global AI development. For years, US and Chinese tech companies collected data from around the world without clear consent or compensation, then used it to train their own AI models. With data-driven businesses generating over $2 trillion annually, who owns the data determines who profits.

The Ripple Effect
African institutions aren't just storing this data. They're already putting it to work in surprising ways.
The University of Ghana is using WAXAL for maternal healthcare research. Other organizations are developing customer service bots, educational tools, and accessibility features that finally work in local languages.
"These institutions aren't just collectors. They are now hubs of AI infrastructure," Diack said.
The project took three years to complete and wasn't easy. African languages are incredibly complex, with tonal variations and diacritics that change entire meanings. Google's partners had to design portable recording boxes and use noise-canceling technology to capture studio-quality audio in varied environments.
Nigerian linguist Kola Tubosun notes some challenges remain. The Yoruba data lacks diacritics, which are crucial for accurate speech recognition. Google has six more languages in the pipeline, bringing the total to 27, but thousands of African languages and dialects still need coverage.
Microsoft is joining the race too, recently launching Paza, a tool for 39 African languages focused on community-led development.
For the first time, African researchers control the building blocks needed to make AI speak their languages, opening doors for millions who've been waiting their turn in the digital revolution.
