Google Powers Solar for 300M Rooftops Across India

Imagine if every rooftop in India could tell you exactly how much solar power it could generate, without anyone having to climb up there with a measuring tape.

That's now possible thanks to Google's expansion of its Solar API technology across more than 300 million buildings throughout India. The system uses artificial intelligence and high-resolution satellite imagery to assess any rooftop's solar potential remotely, cutting out the time and cost of on-site surveys that have long slowed down solar adoption.

But Google isn't stopping at data. The company just signed a deal with ReNew Power to build a massive 150-megawatt solar farm in Rajasthan, doubling its total solar capacity in India to 300 megawatts. That's enough clean electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes while keeping carbon out of the atmosphere.

The most exciting project might be happening in rice paddies across Telangana. Google partnered with Mitti Labs to help smallholder farmers grow rice using climate-smart techniques that dramatically cut methane emissions and water use. Over the next 20 years, this program is expected to prevent nearly 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent from entering the atmosphere.

Satellite technology powered by NASA will track the progress in real time, giving farmers proof that their new methods are working. Four Indian startups just joined Google's inaugural DeepMind Accelerator, where they're using AI to tackle everything from regenerative agriculture to converting invasive plants into biochar. Terrastack, Varaha Climate, Farmers for Forests, and Climitra Carbon are proving that homegrown innovation can scale solutions that work for local communities.

The newly expanded Google Center for Climate Technology is now tackling two more critical challenges: freshwater management and e-waste recycling. In a country where water scarcity affects millions and electronic waste continues to mount, applying AI and data science to these problems could unlock solutions that benefit India and the world.
