Google Scientist Gains Japanese Parents From In-Flight Chat

A Google Research scientist's decision to help struggling passengers on a flight seven years ago gave him a second family halfway around the world.

Raj Dabre, an Indian-origin researcher, was seated next to an elderly Japanese couple on a long-haul flight in 2019. Both he and the couple were recovering from severe influenza, but Dabre noticed they were struggling to communicate and navigate the in-flight entertainment system.

Having previously worked in Japan, Dabre spoke their language and offered to help. What started as a small gesture turned into hours of conversation that revealed an incredible coincidence: the couple lived just a 20-minute bike ride from his home in Japan.

The man handed Dabre his business card before landing and asked him to stay in touch. Encouraged by his biological parents, Dabre reached out, and a beautiful friendship began to bloom.

The relationship deepened during the COVID-19 pandemic when Dabre says his "Japanese parents" helped him cope with isolation. They stayed connected across borders, sharing meals, stories, and life updates despite the distance.

In what Dabre describes as one of his most memorable moments, his biological parents visited Japan and met his Japanese parents in person. The bond grew even stronger when his Japanese father traveled to India in 2023 to witness Dabre's wedding ceremony at the church.
