Google's AI Tools Speed Up Scientific Discovery

Scientists spend countless hours reading studies, forming theories, and running experiments, but Google's new AI toolkit could give them back months of their time.

The tech giant unveiled Gemini for Science at Google I/O 2026, a collection of free AI tools designed to speed up every stage of scientific research. The tools tackle three major bottlenecks that slow down discovery: generating testable ideas, running experiments, and understanding existing research.

The first tool, Hypothesis Generation, scans millions of scientific papers to help researchers develop new theories. Every claim it generates comes with clickable citations, ensuring the suggestions stand on solid ground. Scientists can verify the AI's work immediately instead of spending weeks combing through journals themselves.

Once researchers have a hypothesis, the Computational Discovery tool takes over testing. Google describes it as an AI search engine that can generate thousands of experiments much faster than manual methods. What might take weeks of lab work can now happen in days or even hours.

The third tool, Literature Insights, transforms dense scientific papers into digestible formats. Researchers can chat with the AI to get reports, infographics, or even audio and video summaries of complex studies. This means less time decoding jargon and more time actually doing science.

Google also launched Science Skills, a companion tool that pulls insights from over 30 major life science databases. Complex workflows that normally take hours now finish in minutes, freeing researchers to focus on the creative thinking that AI can't replicate.

The tools are rolling out gradually starting today. Any researcher can request access through a form on the Google Labs website, and Google is also offering the suite to enterprise organizations through Google Cloud.
