"This represents the first time that any researcher in the world can access a comprehensive map of the human genome and its variations by simply opening a browser," said Pushmeet Kohli, vice president of science at Google DeepMind.

Jonathan Sebat, a psychiatric geneticist at UC San Diego, says the atlas will transform his team's work. "Our own workflows in the lab can be streamlined quite a bit because we don't actually have to compute anything," he explains. "We literally can just look up everything."

The database contains a staggering petabyte of information. That's a quadrillion bytes, making it 30 times larger than AlphaFold, DeepMind's earlier protein prediction tool that won a Nobel Prize in 2024.
Each genetic variant gets an AlphaGenome Variant Impact score, ranking how much it affects biological function. Scientists studying a disease without knowing where to start can use these scores to quickly identify the most promising leads.
