Governor Hires Rival's Wife Based on Merit, Not Politics

When Governor Alex Otti needed someone to lead Abia State University Teaching Hospital's board, he didn't look at party membership cards. He looked at résumés.

The Abia State governor recently appointed Chinyere Kalu to chair the hospital board, a decision that raised eyebrows across Nigeria. Her husband, Ben Kalu, serves as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and is one of Governor Otti's fiercest political critics.

The two politicians belong to rival parties and have publicly clashed over state finances and governance. Ben Kalu has even vowed to unseat Otti in the 2027 election.

But when it came time to fill this crucial healthcare position, Otti put performance over politics. Speaking at a wedding ceremony in Umuahia, he revealed that he personally interviewed seven candidates for the role last year.

Chinyere Kalu didn't just edge out the competition. According to the governor, the gap between her qualifications and the second-place candidate was significant.

What set her apart? Her international contacts and expertise in healthcare management stood out during the rigorous selection process. The governor waited nearly a year for the right moment to reconstitute the board before making the appointment official.

"We don't care whether she's APC or PDP or whatever," Otti explained, referring to Nigeria's political parties. "We are interested in what is in her brain."

The Ripple Effect

This approach represents a shift in how public appointments typically work in Nigerian politics, where party loyalty often trumps qualifications. By prioritizing expertise over affiliation, Otti is setting a standard that could influence how other states fill critical positions.

The decision particularly matters for healthcare delivery in Abia State. Teaching hospitals require leadership with both technical knowledge and international connections to secure partnerships, funding, and best practices from around the world.

Otti's administration has made clear that this isn't a one-time gesture. "When the time comes for voting, you can go and vote for whoever you want to vote for," the governor said. "But here, we want results. We want performance."

The appointment shows that even in Nigeria's often divisive political climate, common ground exists when leaders focus on serving citizens rather than settling scores. One governor just proved that the best person for the job might be sitting in your opponent's living room.
