GPS Strands German Tourists, Wyoming Rescuers Save the Day

When a German couple trusted Google Maps to find the fastest route through Big Horn County, Wyoming, they ended up learning an expensive lesson about technology and remote terrain.

The tourists were enjoying Wyoming's stunning scenery last weekend when their GPS directed them onto South Trapper Rim, a popular but extremely rough ATV trail. Their Jeep Compass tried its best to handle the challenging path, but two blown tires later, they found themselves stranded in the wilderness.

That's when Big Horn County Search & Rescue stepped in. The team responded to what became their 26th mission of the year, bringing along help from Big Horse Point Tire & Auto to get the stranded couple safely back to their hotel.

The rescue team shared the incident as a friendly reminder that GPS apps don't account for everything. Navigation technology can't tell you about seasonal road conditions, remote trail difficulty, or whether your vehicle can actually handle what looks like a simple shortcut on a screen.
