Grandfather Raises $1M for Childhood Cancer in 11 Years

When his granddaughter Mary Elizabeth was dying from cancer, Joe Posey made her a promise. She told him she didn't want other children to go through what she had experienced, and he vowed to do whatever he could.

Eleven years later, that promise has grown into something extraordinary.

Posey, a Central Georgia grandfather, has organized the Mary Elizabeth Memorial Golf Tournament every Labor Day since his granddaughter's passing. The annual event at Houston Lake Country Club in Perry has raised close to $1 million for childhood cancer research and families facing impossible financial choices.

The first tournament brought in $30,000. Posey kept challenging himself and his community to do more each year, watching the numbers climb from $50,000 to $70,000 and beyond.

"I said, well, if we can do 50, we can do 70," Posey recalled.

The money addresses a brutal reality many families face. When a child develops cancer, one parent often must leave work to stay with the child during treatment, cutting household income in half. Families spend weeks or months away from home, juggling travel, housing, food, bills, and caring for other children.

Last year, the tournament identified five families affected by childhood cancer and provided direct financial assistance. Word has spread through the community, and people now reach out to Posey when they know a family in need.

The Labor Day tournament has become a community tradition. The four-person scramble costs $200 per player and includes lunch, gifts, and snacks. A three-day silent auction featuring everything from artwork to vacation homes has become a fundraising powerhouse, fueled entirely by community donations.
