Greece's New App Compares 10,000 Supermarket Prices Daily

Greek families struggling with rising grocery bills just got a powerful new tool to save money at the checkout.

The government launched PosoKanei, a free app and website that lets shoppers compare prices on around 10,000 supermarket products across ten major chains in real time. The platform updates daily, showing exactly where each item costs less and how prices compare to stores in Italy, France, Belgium, Romania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Spain.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called it "another weapon in the fight against inflation" during Tuesday's unveiling. With inflation hitting 5% in May, among the highest in the eurozone, Greek households have been feeling the squeeze on everyday expenses.

The app goes beyond simple price comparisons. It stores at least two months of price history for each product, allowing shoppers to see if that "special offer" is really a deal or just marketing.

Users can build personalized shopping lists and search entire categories like coffee or pasta to find the lowest prices. The platform even suggests cheaper alternatives in the same product category, helping families reduce their total grocery bill without sacrificing what they need.

The Ripple Effect

When multinational brands sell the same product across Europe, PosoKanei displays those foreign prices too. This transparency puts pressure on retailers to justify why Greek consumers might pay more than shoppers in neighboring countries for identical items.

The ten supermarket chains currently included are Galaxias, Sklavenitis, Chalkiadakis, SYNKA, Masoutis, My Market, AB Vassilopoulos, Kritikos, Market In, and Lidl. Portugal will join the seven comparison countries soon.

The government designed the app to evolve based on user feedback and real shopping patterns. It replaces an older platform called e-katanalotis that offered more limited features.

For families watching every euro, the ability to quickly spot price differences across stores could mean significant monthly savings. Instead of driving to multiple locations or manually checking websites, shoppers now have comprehensive pricing data in their pocket.

Knowledge is power, and Greek consumers just gained a lot more of both.
