After five exhausting days, Greek firefighters are finally seeing progress against a stubborn wildfire that threatened communities northwest of Athens. Calmer winds allowed 575 ground crew members and 30 water-bombing aircraft to join forces near the coastal village of Psatha, about 37 miles from Greece's capital.

"The situation has clearly improved compared to the last few days," fire department communications chief Vassilis Vathrakoyannis told reporters Tuesday. Coordinated aerial and ground attacks helped contain the blaze that started Friday from a faulty power cable.

The fire scorched more than 32,000 acres of forest and farmland around the Gulf of Corinth, damaging dozens of homes in villages like Porto Germeno. Hillsides once thick with pine trees now stand charred, a stark reminder of the fire's power.

Despite the progress, firefighters remain vigilant. Large patches of scorched ground still hide smoldering pockets that could reignite if winds pick up again, keeping crews stationed throughout the affected areas.

The battle hasn't been without heartbreaking losses. Five firefighters died during operations last week, including a Danish pilot and Greek co-pilot whose helicopters collided while fighting flames west of Athens.
