Guadalajara Gets Ready: World Cup Brings Green Upgrades

Guadalajara is getting a major glow-up just in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the improvements are here to stay.

The city known as "La Perla Tapatía" has nearly finished upgrades to the crucial Chapala Highway connecting the airport to downtown. Three lanes instead of two will help manage the influx of soccer fans arriving for games throughout June. A new bus line, Line 5, launches June 4 to give travelers another reliable option.

One planned overpass won't be ready in time. Officials paused construction to avoid blocking traffic during the tournament, prioritizing visitor safety over speed. The project will resume after the final whistle blows.

While preparing for guests, the city is tackling a less visible problem. Jalisco state produces 82,000 tons of electronic waste yearly, enough to fill the city's massive Akron Stadium 12 times over. That's a mountain of old phones, laptops, and appliances leaching toxic chemicals into soil and water.

The University of Guadalajara stepped up with its fifth annual Rec-olectrón campaign. During the first week of June, residents can drop off electronics free at the university's main building. Items accepted include mobile phones, computers, monitors, microwaves, and washing machines. The program keeps harmful materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium out of landfills and waterways.

Governor Pablo Lemus made clear these upgrades aren't just World Cup window dressing. The beautification projects will continue long after fans head home, positioning Guadalajara as a world-class cultural destination. Officials have already removed 50 billboards from major thoroughfares, with 46 lacking proper permits.

The combination of improved infrastructure and environmental responsibility sends a powerful message. Cities can prepare for major events while making lasting investments in their communities and planet.
