Gymnast Alice Kinsella Returns to Team GB a Year After Birth

A year ago, Alice Kinsella gave birth to her son Parker. This weekend, she's competing for Great Britain again, making gymnastics history in the process.

The Olympic bronze medalist became the first British artistic gymnast to return to elite competition after childbirth when she competed at the British Championships in March. Now she's taking an even bigger step, representing Team GB at an international meet against France, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy in Stoke on September 12-13.

"It's kind of crazy, it's such a surreal feeling but I am very excited," Kinsella told BBC Radio Stoke. She'll compete in all four apparatus events: balance beam, bars, vault, and floor.

What makes this comeback so remarkable is what pregnancy and childbirth do to the body. Gymnastics demands intense core and pelvic floor strength, both weakened during pregnancy. Kinsella's return is so rare that university researchers wrote a paper studying her journey.

The two-time European champion took just three to four weeks off after giving birth before returning to training. Her goal was originally to compete again in 2027, but she found herself ahead of schedule. "I'm actually a lot further forward than I thought I would be," she said.

Kinsella admits getting back into a leotard "feels very weird" with how her body has changed. But she tries to think about it positively, recognizing what her body accomplished.

Beyond the physical comeback, Kinsella says motherhood has transformed her as an athlete. She's more patient now and doesn't beat herself up over tiny mistakes the way she used to. "You have to be patient with kids, they're crazy," she said with a laugh.

Her son Parker will be in the crowd watching his mom compete this weekend. That adds something special to an already emotional moment for Kinsella, who won team bronze at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and gold at the European Championships twice.

She's keeping expectations realistic for this weekend, viewing it as a chance to enjoy competing on all four apparatus again and gain experience. Her bigger goals remain the 2027 World Championships and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

"Whatever happens, happens, good, bad," Kinsella said. "I'm just proud I'm able to be back out there a year postpartum."
