Haaland Leads Norway to First World Cup in 28 Years

For the first time since 1998, Norway is heading back to the World Cup, and they have their homegrown superstar to thank.

Haaland's connection to Norway runs deep, from sporting "Braut Haaland" on his jersey (combining both his mother's and father's names in Norwegian tradition) to owning multiple properties in his homeland and planning to run a farm there after retirement.

"Despite Haaland's global superstar status, he remains the exact same guy," Norwegian football journalist Andreas Korssund told BBC Sport. "He knows exactly where he comes from and regularly visits his small hometown in Rogaland."

That loyalty means everything to a nation starved of major tournament football. Norway last appeared at a major competition during Euro 2000, meaning talented players like John Carew and John Arne Riise never got their World Cup moment.

The Ripple Effect spreads far beyond one player's remarkable goal tally. Arsenal's Martin Odegaard just won the Premier League and joins Haaland alongside other top-flight talents like Kristoffer Ajer and Jorgen Strand Larsen. Many consider this Norway's golden generation, similar to Belgium's breakthrough years ago.

Haaland owns the spotlight, but he's lifting an entire team with him. He returns regularly to stroll the streets of Oslo, makes himself available to Norwegian press, and embraces his Viking heritage with fierce pride. His fame now approaches that of Messi or Ronaldo, something Norway has never experienced before.

When Haaland steps onto the pitch for Norway's opening match against Iraq on June 16, he won't be carrying the weight alone. He'll be sharing it with teammates who helped make this dream real and a nation that never stopped believing.
