Hall Baseball Erases 10-Run Deficit to Win Mayor's Cup

When your team is losing 10-0 after the first inning, most players start thinking about the bus ride home. Hall High School's baseball team started thinking about how to win.

The Warriors from West Hartford, Connecticut pulled off a stunning comeback Wednesday night, erasing a double-digit deficit to defeat rival Conard 14-11 at the University of Hartford's Fiondella Field. The annual Mayor's Cup game delivered drama that had fans buzzing long after the final out.

Conard seemed unstoppable early, capitalizing on walks and defensive mistakes to jump ahead 10-0. But Hall senior Tommy Hussey said his teammates never lost belief.

"We never had a doubt," Hussey explained after the game. "The team knew after that first inning that we had it in us to come back and win."

The turning point came when pitcher Alexandre Rebours stepped onto the mound in relief. Rebours shut down Conard's offense, allowing just one run the rest of the way and giving his teammates room to breathe.

Hall's bats finally came alive in the fourth inning. Max Hanawalt drew a leadoff walk, then Quinn O'Neill ripped an RBI triple to put the Warriors on the board. Patient at-bats and smart hitting produced five runs that inning, cutting Conard's lead in half.
