Hamilton Gala Raises $640K for Personalized Medicine

Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation is hosting its second annual Breakthrough Bash, a celebration that puts the future of medicine on full display while raising critical funds for personalized treatment research.

The September 11th event at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum will gather 400 community members for an evening focused on what might be medicine's most promising frontier. Personalized medicine uses each patient's unique genetics, biology, lifestyle and environment to create tailored prevention, diagnosis and treatment plans.

"Breakthrough Bash is about bringing people together for an evening of connection, inspiration and impact," says Anissa Hilborn, chief executive officer of Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. Every ticket sold directly advances research that could transform how doctors treat everything from cancer to chronic disease.

Last year's inaugural bash proved the concept works. The 2023 event raised over $640,000, funding Breakthrough Awards for six clinician researchers at Hamilton Health Sciences to accelerate promising cancer studies. Those funds also supported an international visiting fellowship in cancer research, bringing global expertise to Hamilton.

The money matters because Hamilton Health Sciences ranks among Canada's top five research hospitals. Thanks to donor support, researchers there are making discoveries that ripple far beyond their city, changing how patients across the country receive care.

This year's event promises Top Chef Canada winner Erica Karbelnik and finalist Josh Karbelnik hosting a live culinary station where guests can watch, interact and experience food as art. The evening includes live entertainment, interactive experiences, exceptional dining and a silent auction featuring exclusive packages and unique items.

The Ripple Effect

The impact of events like Breakthrough Bash extends far beyond one hospital system. When researchers unlock how to match treatments to individual patients rather than using one-size-fits-all approaches, those discoveries benefit people everywhere.
