Harwich Mariners Win 7th Title in Cinderella Playoff Run

A third-place team just proved that the regular season doesn't tell the whole story.

The Harwich Mariners won the 2026 Cape Cod Baseball League Championship on August 11, defeating the Bourne Braves 4-2 in the decisive Game 3. It's their seventh title in franchise history and fourth under manager Steve Englert.

The victory caps off one of the most remarkable playoff runs in league history. Harwich finished the regular season with a modest 21-19 record, landing them third in the East Division and making them clear underdogs heading into the postseason.

But the Mariners had other plans. They swept the Brewster Whitecaps in the opening round, including a thrilling 10th-inning walk-off victory in Game 2. The momentum only grew from there.

Next up were the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, the regular season champions and heavy favorites. Harwich took Game 1 in a 12-9 slugfest, then edged out a 7-6 nail-biter in Game 2 to complete another sweep and punch their ticket to the championship series.

After dropping the opening game to the West Division champion Bourne Braves, the Mariners won two straight to complete what's known as a "gentleman's sweep" and claim the crown. They won eight consecutive win-or-go-home games when it mattered most.

Wright State's JP Peltier earned the Star of Stars award as playoff MVP. He posted a .346 batting average with two home runs, six RBIs, and clutch hits throughout the postseason when his team needed them most.
