Hastings College Students Earn Top Music and Theater Honors
Hastings College celebrated its brightest performing arts students with special awards recognizing excellence, leadership, and service. The spring ceremonies honored dozens of students who exemplified artistic achievement and community impact.
After months of rehearsals, performances, and dedication, Hastings College music and theater students finally got their moment in the spotlight.
The college's Department of Music and Theatre held its annual spring recognition ceremonies in late April and early May, celebrating students who went above and beyond in their craft. Music awards were announced at the Music Finale Extravaganza on May 3, while theater students received their honors during the Beaux Arts Awards on April 29.
One standout moment came when the college presented its first-ever Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Ambassador of Music Award to Dr. Robin Koozer, a retired music professor and former department chair. The award recognizes people connected to Hastings College Music who demonstrate exceptional leadership and innovation while championing the performing arts. Going forward, the award will be named after Dr. Koozer to honor his decades of service.

Among the student honorees, Angie Amaya of Hastings earned multiple top recognitions, including Outstanding Senior in Music and the prestigious Sigma Alpha Iota Sword of Honor Award. Clark Boettger of Grand Island received the Gordon L. and Mary Ohlsson Music Award, while Campbell Schukei of Hastings was named "Outstanding Sinfonia" by the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia chapter.
Theater students also shined at the Beaux Arts Awards. The program inducted six new members into the Alpha Psi Omega theater honorary and recognized students at different achievement levels using colored masks. Vinnie Nunnenkamp of Hastings received the White Mask, given to first-year theater students showing great artistic potential.
The Ripple Effect
These awards represent more than individual achievement. They celebrate students who are preparing to bring music, theater, and arts education to communities across Nebraska and beyond. Many award recipients also demonstrated exceptional service, mentoring younger students and advocating for the performing arts in their communities.
The recognition ceremonies remind us that small colleges continue nurturing the next generation of artists and arts educators who will enrich our culture for years to come.
