Young Hawaiian graduate Eric Schultz smiling in cap and gown at high school graduation ceremony

Hawaii Teen Graduates High School After Years Homeless

🦸 Hero Alert

Eric Schultz walked across the stage to grab his diploma after spending years living in shelters and his car while battling to stay in school. The Oahu graduate now plans to attend trade school and help other homeless youth in his community.

Eric Schultz held back tears as he walked across the stage at Waianae High School in Oahu, Hawaii, clutching the diploma he fought years to earn. The 18-year-old had spent much of his teenage life homeless, sleeping in his car and shelters while his parents struggled with addiction.

Schultz's homelessness began at 15, but he refused to let his circumstances derail his education. "I was living in my car for almost about a year, and I was still going to school at the same time," he told Hawaii News Now. "I just kept working toward my goal to graduate."

He's one of 802 homeless minors on Oahu, a reality that motivated him to give back even while struggling himself. In February, he helped distribute donated items to other homeless families, saying it hurt to see so many kids in similar situations.

When Schultz reached out to community member Desiree Adams for help and food, she became his "hanai auntie," a Hawaiian tradition of nurturing children outside their biological family. Adams welcomed him into her home for over a year, setting clear rules and helping him re-enroll in school after working with his parents, who supported the arrangement.

"He said, 'Will you help me? Will you help me go back to school?'" Adams recalled. She insists the credit belongs entirely to Schultz. "You made the choice to change, and you made the choice to set your goals and follow your goals."

Why This Inspires

Schultz's story shows how one caring adult and one determined teenager can overcome circumstances that would defeat many. His refusal to quit school despite having no stable home proves that resilience lives in the most unexpected places.

Even more remarkable is his commitment to pay it forward. While still living at a transitional shelter operated by Residential Youth Services and Empowerment, Schultz is already planning how to help others like him.

His next chapter includes trade school for plumbing and continued community service for homeless youth. "I hope my story can touch other people to go out at their schools to help find funding, or stuff to help out the community," he said. "Anything to help out."

Schultz walked that graduation stage not just for himself, but for every homeless kid who thinks finishing school is impossible.
